Military Educational Benefits

As a Veteran, you may be eligible for educational benefits through numerous GI Bill programs. We’ve collected some programs that may apply to you and their required certification/enrollment documents here.

Chapter 30 or 33 - Montgomery GI Bill

Active Duty, discharged/retired or Post 9/11

  • Application Form 22-1990 (never used benefits) at www.gibill.va.gov (VONAPP) or 22-1995 (previously used benefits). Print a copy for our office.
  • Certificate of Eligibility
  • Copy of DD-214, member 4 (CH 33 only – copy of current orders for CH 30 or active duty members)
  • Class schedule and receipt for payment arrangement/Deferment form for Chapter 30. (Payment is not needed for Chapter 33, but we need a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility.)
  • Academic requirements/degree plan
  • If you are a 34/30 (old GI Bill grandfathered into MGIB): VA form 21-686c signed by student and academic advisor
  • Transfer of CH 333 benefits to dependents additional required forms:
    • Birth Certificate and/or marriage certificate
  • Letter of Intent (LOI) - Each semester
  • Deferment Form - Each semester

Chapter 31 - Vocational Rehabilitation

Must apply through the Veterans Administration

  • VA form 22-1905 (Form supplied by VOCREHAB case manager)
  • Letter of Eligibility
  • Copy of DD-214, member 4 copy
  • Class schedule
  • Academic requirements/degree plan signed by student and academic advisor
  • Letter of Intent (LOI) - Each semester
  • Deferment Form - Each semester

 Chapter 32 - Post Vietnam Era VA Benefits

  • Application VA form 22-1990 (never used benefits) or 22-1995 (previously used benefits).  
    Print a copy for our office.
  • Letter of Eligibility
  • Copy of DD-214, member 4 copy
  • Class schedule and receipt for payment of tuition and fees
  • Degree plan signed by student and academic advisor
  • Letter of Intent (LOI) - Each semester
  • Deferment Form - Each semester

Chapter 35 - Survivors and Dependents Educational Benefits

Service person must be 100 percent permanently and totally disabled or deceased from a service-connected event.

  • Application VA form 22-5490 (never used benefits) or 22-5495 (previously used benefits).

Print a copy for our office.

  • Letter of Eligibility
  • Copy of DD-214, member 4 copy
  • Marriage license and/or birth/death certificate to show relationship to veteran
  • Class schedule and receipt for payment arrangement of tuition and fees
  • Academic requirements/degree plan signed by student and academic advisor
  • Letter of Intent (LOI) - Each semester
  • Deferment Form - Each semester

Chapter 1606/1607 (REAP) - Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserves

  • Application VA form 22-1990 (never used benefits) or 22-1995 (previously used benefits).

Print a copy for our office.

  • VA form DD-2384 Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) from unit
  • Class schedule and receipt for payment arrangement of tuition and fees
  • Academic Requirements/Degree plan signed by student and academic advisor
  • Letter of Intent (LOI) - Each semester
  • Deferment Form - Each semester

Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA)

  • Service members of the Army Reserves or National Guard apply through the GoArmyEd web portal at goarmyed.com.  Please contact the FSU Veterans Services Office for assistance.
  • Service members of the Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps or Navy need to apply at their units with their Education Counselors.
