Our Goal: Your Success

The Tutoring Center’s mission and goals reflect its purpose – to help every FSU student succeed in the classroom and beyond. To do this, we…

  • Provide a positive and professional environment for learning.
  • Hire, train and retain qualified students as peer tutors.
  • Offer individual tutoring as well as presentations on a variety of learning issues.

Partner with academic departments to provide academic support. Our Tutoring Services

Content Peer Tutoring: Students experiencing difficulty in 100- and 200-level courses can schedule appointments for help in select classes. Common subject areas include biology, chemistry, math, geography, and writing.

Writing Tutoring: Peer writing tutors are available for students who want to improve their writing in any class. Writing tutors can help you generate and organize ideas, use correct grammar, learn proofreading techniques, and correctly document your sources. Tutors do not edit, proofread, or write papers for students. Their goal is to make you a better writer.

Select Course Tutoring: Peer tutors offer assistance in select business, math, computer science and natural science courses on an appointment-only basis.

Professional Tutoring: Tutoring provided by the professional staff assists students whose problems are more general than those addressed by peer tutoring. Some students need to improve their overall approach to learning and studying. Others need to develop specific studying and learning skills, such as textbook reading, note taking, time management, or test preparation in order to cope with the expectations of courses.

We succeed when students develop stronger skills and new confidence to become competent learners. We are ready to equip you with the tools you need to successfully navigate your way through an array of learning situations during your FSU years.

CRLA Certified Tutors

crla

Several writing and content tutors at FSU have earned certification through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), an entity that provides recognition and positive reinforcement for tutors' successful work. Certification is earned by completing a set number of tutoring hours and attending tutor training sessions.

What our students say:

“My physics tutor really wanted to help me, which was reassuring.”

“My English tutor was very helpful, understanding, had a good sense of humor, showed a real interest in wanting to help, and pushed me to figure out things on my own.”

“My chemistry tutor didn't’t just tell me what to do.  He offered me ways to figure out things on my own.  He was very patient.”

“My philosophy tutor made a complex subject simple to understand.”

“I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the tutoring services at FSU. I took Math 209 this semester and was very impressed by my tutor’s knowledge, patience, and dedication. He was very reliable and went out of his way to provide help and support. I have been out of school for over 20 years, so math was quite daunting for me. Without the tutor’s help, I would have dropped the class within the first week.  The tutor had to start with the very basics and go from there. I didn't even know how to use my TI-83 calculator! Needless to say, he was my saving grace and I can't say enough about the high quality tutoring he provided.” --Julia Miller, RN, Brady Health Center
